Starlets: The would be champions that never were

Did Football Kenya Federation officials jump the gun in anticipation of the Harambee Starlets’ success at the Cecafa Women Championship?

It looks like, after it emerged the management printed several t-shirts with the message, “Harambee – Cecafa Women 2016 Champions” emblazoned on the eve of the final game of the regional tournament in Jinja, Uganda.

Presumably, these t-shirts were to be donned by the Harambee Starlets players in the event they won the seven-team Cecafa Women Championship in Kampala.

TRIUMPHANT RECEPTION

Well, that didn’t happen. Instead, team Kenya lost a highly competitive and contentious final by a slim 1-2 margin to Tanzania at the Fufa Technical Centre in Jinja on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the Starlets returned home to both a triumphant and heroic reception from government and federation officials,  alongside football fans.

Curiously, upon return, Nairobi News captured a clique of ably built men donning the “Champions” t- shirts. Needless to point out, those t-shirts would have been worn by the Starlets players had they beaten Tanzania in the finale. Lessons learnt?
