Stars move seven places up Fifa rankings

National football team Harambee Stars has moved up seven places in the current Fifa World rankings.

They are ranked 116th in the world and 34th in Africa with 263 points. Stars were previously ranked 123rd.

In their last three assignments, Stars drew two games and lost one. Although this is still far from the team’s highest ever ranking – 68th in 2008 – it is an indication of progress with a crucial African Cup of Nations tie against 2012 African Champions Zambia on the horizon.

Speaking on phone to Daily Nation Sport, Star coach Bobby Williamson acknowledged the new development but is more concerned with his team’s performance.

“We are currently concentrating on the fixtures ahead. I am however pleased with the improvement and our aim is to break into the top 100,” Williamson said.

Algeria is Africa’s top team with 941 points and is ranked 19th globally, followed by Cote d’Ivoire (21st) and Ghana (25th).

Following their Copa America runners-up finish, Argentina leapfrogged Germany to the top position with 1473 points. The Germans are now second (1411) with Belgium (1244) in third.

Colombia, Netherlands, Brazil, Portugal, Romania, England, Wales complete the top ten positions.

The best movers in Africa are Guinea Bissau (133) and Mauritania (128) with the teams moving 22 and 21 positions respectively in the world rankings.
