State House: Nairobi beautification is not for Obama

July 9th, 2015 1 min read

State House now claims they had initiated the beautification programme of Nairobi city long before President Barack Obama announced his visit to Kenya.

The president’s communication team says the upgrade was set in motion in March when the Cabinet “resolved that Nairobi must be lit and beautified”.

“‘Nexus’ today reveals how Cabinet took the extraordinary step of inviting Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero over the look of the city long before US President Barack Obama confirmed that he would come to Kenya,” reads a post uploaded on, nexus.or.ke, the “Government Newsroom that communicates transformation”.

BRIGHTER AND CLEANER

The post says during the meeting, President Uhuru Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto and cabinet secretaries told Dr Kidero that they would not sit and watch as Nairobi – being the seat of the National Government – “get dirtier, darker and an eyesore to residents and visitors”.

The post says Dr Kidero outlined to the meeting the measures the county government was taking to make the city better.

The post says close to 15,000 new lanterns, public lighting masts and floodlights have been installed in Nairobi making the city “brighter and cleaner”.

Nairobi county has set aside Sh50 million for beautification of the city ahead of Obama’s arrival later this month.
