Staunch Adventist Maraga skips church to attend Jonathan Moi’s funeral

Chief Justice David Maraga on Saturday missed church to attend the burial of Jonathan Moi, the first son of former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, in Kabarak.

Justice Maraga, while appearing before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for the interview of the Chief Justice position, vowed never to compromise his Seventh Day Adventist beliefs to attend to work on a Saturday.

He said he could only miss church to attend to a matter of life and death, for instance an accident happening on his way to church in which he would stop to help the victims.

He has stringently adhered to never working on Sabbath, including moving the hearing of the pre-trial of a petition filed by Raila Odinga to 7pm on a Saturday.

Fast forward to Jonathan Moi’s funeral service and the Chief Justice was seen sitting among mourners and political leaders who were in attendance.

Those in attendance included Deputy President William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Senator Moses Wetangula and Senator James Orengo.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga are not in attendance as they are away in China.

Mr Jonathan Moi succumbed to pancreatic cancer on April 20 while receiving treatment at Nakuru War Memorial Hospital.
