Stewart Hall top candidate for Leopards’ coaching job

Former Sofapaka coach, Stewart Hall, is the top candidate for the coaching job at troubled Kenyan Premier League side AFC Leopards, Nairobi News understands.

According to well placed sources, also under consideration for the job by a section of the club’s management is Ugandan Jackson Mayanja, Briton Bobby Williamson and Belgian Luc Eymael, who has previously coached the club.

Leopards, who have had a largely disappointing run in the first leg of the 2016 KPL season, are currently seeking to replace under fire Belgium coach Ivan Minnaert.

Under Minnaert’s watch, the club has dropped from third to 13th on the log from 16 matches played so far. It is also reported Minnaert has fallen out with a section of the club’s hierarchy as well as a number of fans.

Hall masterminded Azam’s win at last year’s Cecafa Kagame Cup in Rwanda, with impressive results that included a 2-0 win over Gor Mahia in the final.

POOR RUN

Mayanja, a former Uganda Cranes forward and assistant to Williamson during the latter’s stint in charge of the Uganda national team, led Simba to third place in Tanzania’s Vodacom league last season, one place behind Hall’s Azam FC.

Eyamel, on his part, also boasts of an impressive record in the continent. He has previously coached among other teams Sudan’s El Merreikh and Oman club Al Nasr.

“We are concerned with the club’s poor run in the league and one of the aspects my team is looking at is the technical bench. We have several meetings lined up during the course of this week and thereafter a decision on the way forward will be issued. I am not ruling out anything,” Leopards co-chairman Matthews Opwora told Nairobi News.

Leopards lost 1-0 away to Chemelil Sugar at the weekend and are set to play Thika United in their next league assignment in Nairobi on  Saturday.
