Stop taking selfies and score goals, Ambani tells Kenyan strikers
Former Harambee Stars forward Boniface Ambani has lashed out at local strikers who seem all too keen to ‘take selfies’ instead of scoring goals on the pitch.
Ambani is best remembered for his illustrious football career with clubs in Kenya, Tanzania and India.
In a long Facebook post early this week, Ambani asked the players to also ‘sit down and analyze themselves.’
“How can a foreigner join (the Kenyan Premier League) in the second leg and he is contesting for the golden boot award with you guys?” Ambani, who on several occasions competed for the top scorers’ gong posed.
He was referring to Ugandan forward Umaru Kasumba, who has been the most impressive player since joining the Kenya Premier League in June.
The Sofapaka forward is already leading the scorers chart both in the league and in the DStv Shield with a total of 17 goals in 15 appearances.
LEADING SCORERS
The Ugandan striker and Stephen Waruru of Ulinzi Stars are the joint top scorer in the SportPesa Premier League with 11 goals apiece after 28 rounds of matches.
Gor Mahia’s Meddie Kagere and Kepha Aswani of Nakumatt have each scored 10 goals while Jacques Tuyisenge (Gor Mahia) and Chrispin Oduor (Mathera United) both have nine goals to their names.
These are statistics that have not impressed Ambani.
“Your selfies are more than the goals you’ve scored… are you doing justice to your teams???? With 18 teams I expect at least 20 plus goals. Wake up. Stop taking too many selfies and start scoring goals my friends… Let the papers do selfies for you while celebrating goals scored,” Ambani wrote.
Aside from operating a successful local based sports kit firm, Ambani is now coach of AFC Leopards youth team where he is credited with producing the likes of Wilson Oburu this year.
