Storm as Babu Owino denies role in deaths of two varsity students

Two students of the University of Nairobi died on Friday amid reports that they beaten to death by fellow students on suspicion of being in possession of a stolen laptop.

The two, Julius Omondi and Mohammed Yusuf, were reportedly killed outside the halls of residence as other students watched.

A blogger, Robert Alai, sensationally linked student leader Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino and his personal assistant David Osano.

Mr Ongili subsequently issued a media statement denying the reports and vowed to sue the blogger for defamation.

On Tuesday, Babu Owino was interviewed on Nation FM morning show where he claimed to have personally reported the incident at Central police station.

“A student had a laptop stolen, after screaming students came out in large numbers and beat the alleged thieves up. During that incident the security office can attest that David Osano was not there,” he told the show’s host Angela Angwenyi.

“Walk to the Central Police Station and see for yourself that I went there to report the incident,” he said.

Nairobi News had on Monday contacted Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam who stated that he would obtain a brief about the incident and later get in touch.

Subsequent calls to the police boss went unanswered.
