Strathmore mulls Super Cup pullout
Strathmore University Leos could opt out of Bamburi Rugby Super Series, a day after a Sh20 million sponsorship was announced for the tournament.
Leos’ deputy coach Tito Oduk denied claims that their potential pullout was politically motivated, saying the team’s technical bench preferred to give priority to the Kenya Cup play-offs set for May.
Strathmore will play away to Kenya Cup champions Nakuru on May 10, and Oduk said the technical bench is considering having their players in camp to prepare for the clash.
“It is not confirmed yet, but we are considering skipping the Super Series. We feel it may not be very beneficial to the team,” said Oduk, Mitch Ocholla’s deputy, who is away with the Tusker Simba XV in South Africa.
Last season, Leos lost to Nakuru 3-32 in the final, and will be looking to avenge their defeat. Kenya Harlequin will host KCB in the other semi-final at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa grounds.
Kifaru franchise
Strathmore had been drafted into the Kifaru franchise with other universities. The franchise was introduced to the series in 2009 under the name Sharks, and was renamed Kengewa for last year’s championship.
Strathmore and Mean Machine usually supply the bulk of players in the franchise. Leos’ pullout could deal a major blow to Kifaru.
Meanwhile, the Enterprise Cup continues tomorrow with the quarter-finals. The Mwamba Cup pre-quarter finals also kick off tomorrow.
