Strathmore University owns up to botched security drill

Strathmore University has apologised for mishandling Monday’s security drill that killed a staff member and left 20 students with serious injuries.

The admission of guilt came hours after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said Police were not involved in the planning and execution of the security drill.

Mr Boinnet also said the drill had ‘carelessly’ allowed for an actual disaster to happen and that police will be investigating the circumstances that led to the death and injuries

Vice chancellor of Strathmore University Professor John Odhiambos, in a press statement, apologised for the botched drill.

“I offer an unreserved apology to every student, parent, family, colleague and stakeholder for the unfortunate outcome of the security drill that was carried out in the university on 30th November 2015, at 12:00PM,” he said.

“We particularly offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Esther Kidambi, the member of staff we lost as a consequence of this security drill. We empathise with each and every student, parent, family, colleague and stakeholder who suffered injuries, trauma and inconveniences.”

The vice chancellor also said the institution will foot medical expenses incurred by all victims of the drill.

“Currently, 30 students and staff are receiving treatment in various hospitals within Nairobi. In Nairobi Hospital, five patients are admitted while 10 have been discharged. In Nairobi West Hospital, 16 patients were admitted; one in ICU; one in HDU and 14 in the wards. Four patients have been admitted at Mater hospital, one patient at Karen Hospital, and one patient at Menelik Hospital.”
