Strathmore University to foot bills of food poisoning victims

Strathmore University has offered to offset medical expenses incurred by its staff and students hospitalised on Friday after a massive food poisoning at the institution.

In statement, the University confirmed the incident that had occurred to fourth year students and staff members who had attended the Seniors Dinner at the University’s Auditorium.

“Most complaints included stomach pains, vomiting, high fever and running stomach, the severity of each case dependent on each student. The University has undertaken the responsibility of covering the medical expenses of the affected students,’ said a statement by Betty Ngala, the University relations

This was after Nairobi News had exclusively broke the story on Monday.

The University explained that “catering services for the event were outsourced and investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the food poisoning.”

The statement did not disclose who offered the catering services and what  was on the menu.

By Monday, 25 students were still admitted at hospitals in Nairobi, according to the statement.

The Nairobi News understands that some parents of the affected students are considering taking legal action against the institution.
