Why Kenyans want this student appointed NEMA anti-plastic ambassador
A group of Kenyans have called on Nema to appoint a high school student who took the plastic bags ban to the next level as their ambassador.
The student, who is in Form three at Materi Girls in Tharaka Nithi County, wowed Kenyans online after photos of her carrying her back to school shopping wrapped in banana bark flooded the internet.
Hilda Gaceri Bundi was identified by her math teacher Solomon Kiguru after popular Facebook personality Ndungu Nyoro commended her courage.
In Nyoro’s post, Kenyans urged the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to appoint Hilda as the ambassador for the plastic ban.
The Authority is yet to comment.
A well-wisher offered school fees coupon and another a school bag to the girl for using available resources to carry her school shopping.
Hilda told Nyoro that she was getting late for school and did not have the money to buy a new school bag.
“Her school was opening yesterday but by 3 p.m she wasn’t prepared yet. She was running late. She had no bag and again getting one would cost her Kshs. 200. Why not try this bag, save time of looking for a new one, and money? She thought.”Kila mtu ni binadamu hakuna haja ya kuogopa”, she convinced herself. She quickly ran to JUBE SUPERMARKET in Nkubu Town, purchased a few personal items and run to school in time for 5 p.m deadline. She has no idea who took her pics that are now doing rounds online,” wrote Nyoro.
Mr Kiguru, the math teacher who identified the girl in the photos, said Hilda’s courage was amazing.
“The courage was amazing as the young generation is trying to outdo each other and for her to get creative and find a local solution to avoid carrying a plastic paper bag to school was commendable,” he told Nairobi News on phone.
The teacher added that the school administration commended Hilda for her courage and offered to assist her in any way.
“She came with the bag even during inspection so when teachers saw her they commended her for her creativity and even the principal and deputy had a chat with her,” said Mr Kiguru.
