Students thwart attempted robbery at Catholic church

Form Four students of Kevote High School Sunday night thwarted an attempted robbery by a gang of armed robbers trying to break into a church.

The 10 man gang had stormed Kevote Catholic shortly after midnight targeting over Sh30,000 that had been raised by the church youth to renovate their workshop.

Parish priest Agapius Kamau said the gang had broken the church gate and were about to storm the priests’ house when a watchman turned on the alarm, alerting the students and members of the community.

SPATE OF INSECURITY

He said the attack was the second one following another in April, where over Sh100,000 was stolen.

Fr Kamau said there was an increased spate of insecurity in the area and also took issue with the police for failing to visit the scene of the incident despite the local police post being just 200 metres away.

“The police didn’t show up even after the noise triggered by the alarm when it went off. It is disappointing since they live just 200 meters away. I thank the students and members of the community for their quick response,” he said on phone.

The students, who will complete their KCSE this week, had earlier attended a thanksgiving mass at the church to bid farewell to members of the community.
