Supermarket staffer in court for theft of chocolate bars worth Sh28,000

A Naivas Supermarkets staffer who allegedly stole chocolate bars worth Sh28,350 at the retailer’s Buruburu branch in Nairobi is facing charges of stealing by servant contrary to Section 281 of the Penal Code.

Arnold Kose is accused of stealing 10 pieces of Dairyland white compound chocolate bars of 2.5kg each on diverse dates between December 2 and 12, 2022, which came into his possession by virtue of his employment. Each of the chocolate bars is valued at Sh2,835.

The Makadara Law Courts was told how a camera room operator, while going through the CCTV footage at the supermarket, noticed that Mr Kose had been captured stealing a chocolate bar from the bakery store.

The operator informed the managers who joined in reviewing the footage. Mr Kose was found to have allegedly accessed areas he was not supposed to access according to his assigned work.

The managers traced Mr Kose within the supermarket and reportedly recovered one of the chocolate bars from him.

They reviewed the CCTV footage further and established that a total of 10 pieces of the chocolate bars had been stolen and Mr Kose was captured on December 2 allegedly stealing one of the missing bars.

The matter was reported at the Buruburu Police Station and police officers, after reviewing the CCTV footage, confirmed the managers’ allegations against Mr Kose and arrested the suspect.

Mr Kose denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Gathogo Sogomo of Makadara Law Courts and was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000.

The case will be mentioned on February 2, 2023 before the hearing starts on May 29, 2023.
