SuperSport is here to stay

Pay TV Channel SuperSport has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and promoting sports in Kenya, but the company’s management say they would prefer going about their business in a “calmer environment”.

The South African based firm has invested billions of shillings in the country in the past few years, with the funds facilitating the acquisition of world class broadcasting equipment and acquisition of rights for a number of sporting activities including the Kenyan Premier League.

But recent public spats between Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) regarding the structure and composition of the top flight league has since led to fears that the multi billion shilling firm could reconsider its operations in the country.

“That is not and has never been the case. We are here for the long haul, the company is committed to ensuring sport thrives, but of course we will prefer to work in a more quiet environment,” SuperSport’s General Manager for East Africa Auka Gacheo told Nairobi News.

Auka refused to be drawn in the current debate on whether next season’s top flight league should consist of 16 or 18 teams, saying “we will let those in charge decide and support whatever has been decided upon.”
