New survey reveals crime patterns in Nairobi
Four in 10 Nairobians have been victims of crime in the city in the last one year, a new survey shows.
In total, 39 percent of the general population in the city reported having been victims of crime while 61 per cent had not.
This is according to the first ever Nairobi opinion poll on transportation conducted for the Center for Sustainable Urban Development of Earth Institute, Columbia University in partnership with the Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) which was launched in Nairobi on Wednesday.
The poll was conducted between March 17th – 19th, 2015.
NASTY EXPERIENCE
Up to 49 per cent of the crimes were experienced inside a public transport vehicle, 36 per cent was while walking from one place to another, the new survey shows.
Twenty per cent was inside a personal vehicle, 15 per cent was while waiting for a PSV and on the street talking to someone (seven per cent).
Three in 10 Nairobians (70 per cent) have lost or not taken a job/business because of transport problems.
This means only seven in 10 city residents have never had such a nasty experience.
Interestingly, more Nairobians living in households with cars (34 per cent) have lost or not taken a job/business because of transportation problems.
