Suspect killed in city kidnap drama

A suspected kidnapper was shot dead and three of his accomplices arrested as the public and a licensed gun holder rescued two men from the gang.

The two men, one of them of Asian descent, are reported to have been kidnapped in Mombasa a few days ago and were being taken to a hideout in Kiserian when the confrontation occurred.

Sh10m ransom

The two, from Tononoka in Mombasa, had since their kidnap been hidden in an undisclosed house within Ngong township.

The kidnappers who numbered six had demanded a ransom of Sh10 million in order to release the victims.

But that was not to be as the gang was stopped by the crowd that became suspicious of its movements.

The gang was leaving its hideout for a more secure place.

According to Ngong police boss Farah Mohammed, a licensed gun holder, was driving past when he noticed disturbance around the kidnappers’ car.

“He was driving home and he saw a commotion between the public and six men in a car on the Kiserian-Isinya road. He gunned down one kidnapper and the crowd assisted in the arrest of the three,” Mr Farah said.

He added: “The kidnappers had held the victims in a house in Kibiko for a while before moving them to Kiserian on Friday evening.”

Mr Farah said the public raised alarm after being suspicious of movement of the saloon car on the outskirts of the township.

Investigations revealed that one of the suspected kidnappers was a Ngong resident.

He thanked the locals for rescuing the two, and urged them to continue working closely with police to reduce crime in the area.

He said the three kidnappers would be arraigned in court once investigations were complete.

Kidnapping has been on the increase in Nairobi recently.
