Suspected gangsters gunned down in Naivasha
Police in Naivasha on Friday evening gunned down two suspected gangsters who had carjacked a local contractor and recovered an AK 47 riffle, six ammunition and Sh 200,000.
The two, were part of three-man gang, which had attempted to extort money from a contractor after holding him hostage for more than six hours.
According to the Naivasha criminal investigation department boss Martin Mbaya the three, had earlier in the day, escorted the contractor to a local bank and forced to withdraw Sh 400,000.
“He was being escorted to the bank to withdraw an additional Sh 200,000 when he managed to alert the police,” said Mbaya.
He was accompanied by one of the suspects while his accomplices waited for them to deliver money at their hideout at Keroche area where they were hiding in uncompleted structure.
Unaware they were being trailed, the thugs were in the process of receiving the money, when they were ordered to surrender by the police but instead opened fire.
“The police managed to fire back, killing two of them but the third suspect managed to escape with some of the stolen loot,” said Mr Mbaya.
He said the three were part of a gang that shot and seriously injured administration police officers four days earlier.
He said acting on intelligence they were able to gather the details of the one of the suspects and were able to positively identify him as the one felled by the police bullet.
Speaking at the police station, the contractor said he was flagged down by the one of the suspect as he went about with his business within Naivasha town.
“He brandished an AK 47 rifle and asked me to cooperate or they would shoot me dead. They then forced to drive with them for several hours before they asked me to withdraw money,” he said.
The contractor added that they had hijacked him four days earlier and robbed him Sh 8,000 and promised to come few days later for more money.
“They made good their threat, before the police came to my rescue he added.”
Mr Mbaya said they were still trailing one of the suspects who managed to flee from the shooting scene.
