Suspects nabbed for stealing Sh8 million from abandoned Petrol Station

Police have arrested three suspects for robbing a Kiambu-based businessman of Sh8 million.

According to police, the money was stolen from a safe hidden in an abandoned petrol station in Kinangop, Nyandarua County.

Police said the businessman’s wife reported the incident late last month.

“The suspects are believed to have entered the building through the roof before helping themselves to the cash after breaking the safe,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said on Tuesday.

A total of Sh2.5 million has since been recovered from the suspects, who have been identified as David Mushendu, Moses Cherish and Eliud Wangai.

The suspects are charged with stealing contrary to Section 281 of the Penal Code.

Last month, two police officers were arrested in Nandi District for robbing a petrol station at Ndurio trading centre in Aldai Constituency, Nandi South Sub-County.

The officers were allegedly spotted by eagle-eyed members of the public who knew they were police. They then alerted their superiors, leading to their arrest.

The police also relied on CCTV footage which allegedly showed them stealing an unknown amount of money from the filling station.

Detectives did not reveal how much money was stolen from the petrol station and assured the public and the business community in the area that the investigation would also identify those caught on CCTV.

In a separate incident late last month, police in Machakos launched investigations into an attempted robbery where five men dressed in police uniforms attacked Delta Petrol Station near Nguluni Market in Matungulu sub-county.

The incident, which was captured on CCTV, shows the gang of ‘officers’ allegedly arriving with a person who claimed to have been beaten by the staff at the petrol station under the pretext of conducting a follow-up.

They then forced the attendants and security guard to lie down in the office before tying them up and locking them in a men’s toilet.

According to a customer service attendant identified as Timothy Mwangangi Kaloki, three of the men first arrived at around 2 am wearing police uniforms and entered the office where their other colleague was waiting.

He said the three were accompanied by a person who appeared to have been beaten up.

CCTV footage obtained from the management showed the robbers orchestrating the whole operation as they tried to dig through the wall but failed and later left disappointed.

Police said nothing was stolen as the robbers failed to break into the safe, but they have launched an investigation into the matter.
