Teacher charged with defrauding parents of KCPE registration fees


A teacher was on Friday charged in a Nairobi court with fraudulently obtaining more than Sh36,000 from a school for the registration of 28  Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates.

Mr Benjamin Mutuku Lazaro, however, denied the eight counts of obtaining money through false pretences.

A state prosecutor told the court that on diverse dates between November 13 and 20 2015 at Mathare Estate in Starehe sub-county with an intention to defraud, the accused obtained Sh 25,200 from Ms Veronicah Wanjiru Mwaura of Mama Africa Academy claiming he would register 21 pupils of the private school for KCPE.

Besides the academy pupils, Lazaro, is also accused of having obtained Sh1,500 from Teresia Wanja Charles pretending he would register Emmanuel Fadhi for KCPE. He allegedly received the money between February 1-28, 2016.

Mr Lazaro was also charged with obtaining Sh1,500 from Daku Bonaya for the registration of her child Aden Galma for the KCPE.

NOT REGISTERED

From Ms Catherine Simiyu he obtained Sh2,000 for the registration of Magdaline Nafula and from Ms Damaris Nduku Wambua he obtained Sh1,500.

Others who complained were Ndulu Mutalu Charles, Mary Ndunge Muli  and Mary Kalu.

From the three he allegedly received  a total of Sh4.500 pretending he will register their standard eight pupils for the KCPE exams.

Mr Ogembo heard that to their utter shock the complainants discovered their children had not been registered.

“The lives of these 28 children have been adversely affected as their eight years of schooling has been wasted,” the prosecutor said while asking the judge elect to impose a stiff bail term.

The magistrate was urged to release the suspect on stringent terms.

Mr Ogembo ordered tge suspect to deposit a cash bail of Sh50,000 and fixed the case to be heard January 12 2017.
