Teachers: We are resuming work, but just for 90 days

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) have called off the teachers’ strike and asked all its members to resume duty on Monday.

“Teachers in Kenya are law abiding citizens who obeys court orders. It is for this reason alone that we ask our teachers to resume duty next week,” Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion told journalists on Saturday afternoon.

“The battle however will continue if the Government doesn’t fully implement the 50-60 percent pay rise within 90 days,” he added.

The unions held separate meetings with their decision organs before asking members to resume work Monday.

They asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to pay members their September salaries.

PAY RISE

Sossion further said the union will not withdraw from a case in which TSC has appealed against the decision to award teachers the 50-60 per cent pay rise.

He also called for the rescheduling of the national examinations timetable to enable teachers prepare candidates.

Kuppet Secretary-General Akelo Misori asked the Ministry of Education to revise term dates to allow teachers to help candidates revise for national exams.

On Thursday, the court ordered the unions to call off their month-long strike immediately.

Labour Court Judge Nelson Abuodha said he had ordered the unions to suspend the strike for 90 days and start negotiations with the government on the pay dispute.
