Thousands flock Uhuru Park for Christmas celebrations
Thousands of families flocked Uhuru and Central Parks to celebrate Christmas even as streets remained relatively less congested.
The park seemed to be the focal point of celebrations in the city as families trooped to the park to have a good time and enjoy each others company.
Not to be left behind, street children found generous benefactors in several city residents who decided to bring them all manner of foods and refreshments at the park.
“Every day they eat from the dump and today being Christmas we felt they ought to enjoy the foods they usually don’t get,” said James Muchemi a Criminology student at the University of Nairobi.
Most of those in the park have brought their children for merrymaking with the businessmen making huge profits. A single photograph for example cost Sh100.
Most of the activities are children focused including; camel rides, merry go-round, boat rides, bouncing castles among others.
Samwel Muturi who has brought his family to the park said that although they had not managed to travel upcountry, his children had still enjoyed the day.
“If the children are happy; then I’m happy,” he added.
Security at the park was also tight with police officers stationed at strategic places in the park to keep the peace.
Christmas church services were also relatively well attended. At the Holy Family Basilica, some of those in attendance had to stand outside as the Christmas mass led by Cardinal John Njue continued.
