Three charged with violent robbery that led to fatal stabbing

Three men linked to a robbery incident in which a man was stabbed to death inside his house in Githurai 44 in Nairobi are facing robbery with violence charges contrary to section 296 (2) of the penal code.

The three – Evans Kamanda, John Wamuiga and John Masame – are accused of violently robbing the deceased, Kelvin Kimani, of his mobile phone worth Sh16,000 during the incident that happened on January 27, 2023.

Mr Kimani was fatally injured during the robbery. On that day, he left his workplace in Industrial Area Nairobi and headed home after promising his father that he would return to work the next day.

When he failed to show up for work the following day, his father tried reaching him but his phone was switched off. Three days later, Mr Kimani’s brother went to check on him at his house.

He found Mr Kimani’s door ajar and was confronted by a foul smell emanating from the single room. Upon gaining entry, he found his brother’s half naked body lying partly under the bed.

He reported the matter to the police and on March 12, 2023 officers arrested Mr Masame who had sold the deceased’s mobile phone to another man at a club in Githurai. The suspect found with the phone has also been charged with the robbery.

Mr Masame told the police that he got the phone from Mr Kamanda and Mr Wamuiga who requested him to sell it. He led the officers to the other two suspects’ houses where they were arrested.

When they appeared before Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi, all the suspects denied the charges and were released on a bond of Sh1 million. Hearing of the case starts on July 11, 2023.
