Three shot dead after hijacking UN staff, impersonating traffic cops – VIDEO

Police on Monday afternoon shot and a killed three suspected kidnappers who are reported to have hijacked a United Nations (UN) staff in Machakos.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects were in a five-man gang.

They were found masquerading as traffic police officers along the Machakos–Kitui Road.

“The five men were performing traffic duties along Machakos-Kitui Rd when detectives commanded them to surrender, instead they fired at the officers,” said the DCI.

Upon being ambushed by detectives, the suspects allegedly declined to surrender, prompting the officers to open fire.

“The thugs have been impersonating Traffic Police Officers along the major roads before handcuffing their victims and stealing their motor vehicles,” said DCI in a tweet.

Detectives said that they have been following the suspects based on information received from their previous victims.

Two of the suspects managed to escape.

Detectives managed to rescue the UN official who had already been handcuffed.

Police recovered from the scene a pistol, rounds of ammunition, traffic police uniform and a vehicle that the suspects were using.
