Relatives cry as alleged Thuo killers remanded
Relatives of six people alleged to have killed former Kenya Bus Service managing director George Thuo were in tears on Tuesday as they came to terms with the turn of events.
Some huddled together for comfort while their tears flowed freely as they followed the proceedings at the Milimani law courts.
The prosecution recommended and was allowed to have the suspects remanded in custody at the Muthaiga police station until Wednesday next week when investigations will be concluded.
Paul Wainaina Boiyo, Christopher Andika, Andrew Karanja, Samuel Kuria, Esther Ndinda and Ruth Watahi were alleged to have contributed to the death of Mr Thuo through poisoning.
He collapsed at Porkies Gardens Restaurant in Thika Town on the night of November 17, 2013 and later died while undergoing treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
Cause of death
The prosecution, led by Catherine Mwaniki on Monday told Judge David Majanja that investigations had revealed the cause of death as haemorrhagic gastroenteritis or bleeding in the stomacb. The bleeding, the court heard was acute due to suspected chemical poisoning.
“The six were arrested on January 3, 2014 and investigations will take eight days. If released on bail, they have the potential of interfering with the said investigations,” explained Ms Mwaniki.
Judge Majanja, while allowing the prosecution to continue holding the accused in custody, said the police should be able to finalise their investigations and have the accused taken for mental assessment as the prosecution had recommended.
After investigations, Mrs Mwaniki said the Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko would be able to decide on the charges to be preferred against the suspects.
The arrest of the six has brought operations at the said restaurant to a halt as they were critical in its running.
Mr Boiyo is the owner of the club, Mr Andika a close friend of the late Mr Thuo, Mr Karanja and Kuria are both DJs, Ms Ndinda a waitress and Ms Watahi a club patron.
