TNA moves to tame Sonko

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko will on Tuesday face a motion of censure orchestrated by his own party TNA.

The censure motion is a retaliation to Mr Sonko’s futile attempt to remove the director of National Intelligence Services Michael Gichangi from office.

Mr Sonko is the deputy Senate whip of the ruling Jubilee coalition. He will be disciplined by his party first before Majority leader Kithure Kindiki moves the motion to discuss him.

Mr Sonko’s motion to have Mr Gichangi probed over the conduct of the spy agency in regard to the Westgate  terror attack was rejected by the Senate.

The Senate had declared that the motion was not properly done and pre-emptive of the work of a taskforce constituted by President Kenyatta to investigate the Westgate attack.

Over the weekend, Prof Kindiki let the cat out of the bag in a public rally in Meru where he warned the Nairobi Senator to “stop being kiddish” with matters of national security.

“ I am telling Sonko to stop joking with security matters. We cannot be a party that intimidates public servants who cannot defend themselves,” Prof Kindiki said in Mitheru, in his Tharaka Nithi County.

At the rally, Prof Kindiki said TNA senators will not support Mr Sonko.

Last evening, a bitter war of words erupted between them, with Prof Kindiki daring Mr Sonko to table evidence to the taskforce set up to investigate the matter.

But Mr Sonko dared Prof Kindiki to discipline, him saying he will continue to fight for Kenyans.

“We are talking of tens of deaths. The terrorists never run out of bullets. How did all that ammunition get into the country without the knowledge of security  agents?” posed Mr Sonko.

The Nairobi Senator said he had resisted pressure mounted on him to drop the motion for the sacking of Mr Gichangi.

Mr Sonko said he will not be intimidated by Prof Kindiki.

“When the miraa issue came, we all supported  him. When the issue of devolved funds came, we supported him. But when it is a matter that touches on my constituents, they do not want to support me. He should shut up and let me deal with it,” he thundered.

Nairobi News reliably learnt that if TNA passed a resolution to suspend him, he will immediately resign as Jubilee Senate Deputy Whip.
