Toi Market to be rebuilt after Sakaja’s visit

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja visited Toi Market on Sunday after a fire destroyed several shops and caused millions of shillings worth of damage.

During his visit, the Governor pledged to help the victims rebuild the market, adding that he would personally donate iron sheets and food.

Governor Sakaja assured the Toi Market traders that he would also donate food and other household items to 2,000 traders affected by the unforeseen fire tragedy.

“We have assessed the damage and we will help you rebuild. The county government will rebuild the market with more space for emergency vehicles to access the market in case of emergency,” said Governor Sakaja.

Sakaja also promised to rebuild better and bigger shops in the market to reduce the spread of fire in the event of such tragedies.

“These traders have been able to make a living and feed their families by running small businesses in Toi market. Meanwhile, we have organised food and material support”.

To end the damage caused by such fire incidents, the governor said his administration was decentralising the fire service and adding more fire tenders in the next financial year.

“I want to assure you that my administration will investigate the incident to determine the cause and come up with long-term solutions.”

He asked the District Planning Department to map and survey the informal settlements to provide access routes in the event of a fire.

The Governor also said that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire and that his team was looking for a long-term solution.

In December last year, when the Gikomba market fire was reported, Sakaja donated Sh2 million to the affected traders and assured them that he would fast-track the issuance of title deeds, which he said would end fire incidents.
