The state of Tom Mboya Street in the city centre best captures the dilapidated condition of roads in Governor Mike Sonko’s reign.
The road is the main access point into and out of the city for matatus operating on different city routes.
It is now riddled with giant potholes from the Khoja roundabout all the way to Haile Sellasie Avenue Junction.
Motorists have borne the brunt of endless repairs due to damaged engine mounting, broken coil springs and tire bursts.
One motorist, Godfrey, told Nairobi News on Tuesday that he spent Sh30, 000 last week on repairs in a single day.
A matatu driver, Charles of Expresso Sacco, plying the Kikuyu – city centre route, had a tire burst after hitting rocks placed to cover up a pothole on the junction of Ronald Ngala Street and Tom Mboya Street.
Matatu operators said that tires which would normally last between nine to ten months before being replaced, nowadays have to be replaced in six months, if lucky.
“The roads are badly in need of full repairs not the minimal patching up,” said Lucy.
