Top official roasted for blaming Garissa victims for dying ‘like cockroaches’

A senior Kenya Police officer has flown into a storm with remarks that many considered to be disrespectful to the 148 people who were killed in Garissa University College last week.

Pius Masai Mwachi, a superintendent of police who is also the acting director National Disaster Management Unit, advised Kenyans to fight attackers to avoid dying “like cockroaches”.

“If something happens like that, fight back,” said Mr Mwachi. “If you are in the hands of terrorists, free yourselves as soon as possible. Don’t just be killed like cockroaches.”

Ben Mulwa ,‏who survived the Westgate attack in 2013, wondered: “How insensitive can one get?”

John Jacob Kioria said: “Pius Masai of the National Disaster Management Unit told families collecting bodies at Chiromo Mortuary not to die like cockroaches. Jeez.”

Majority of the dead, 142, were students who were caught totally flatfooted either asleep, revising in classrooms or in the prayer room.

Mr Mwachi, who made the remarks Thursday during a press conference at the Chiromo mortuary where remains of the attack are preserved, is yet to apologize.
