Tragedy as toddler is burnt to death during hide-and-seek

A three-year-old child  died on Easther Sunday evening after their house caught fire at Matongo area, Kitutu Chache South Sub-County, Kisii County.

The child was among a group of others, among them her brother, 5 , playing hide-and-seek game when one of them torched the grass-thatched unit where the deceased had hid.

Kisii County Police Commander Ms Agnes Mudambi said the incident occurred at 4.30pm as the children frolicked in the field.

Their parents were away when the incident occurred.

Ms Mudambi said they are conducting further investigations into the incident.

“The deceased appears to had been suffocated by plumes of smoke but we are still at it,” she said.

The deceased suffered some burns and bruises during the incident.

Area assistant Chief Elijah Morara said it appears that the child who torched the house had innocently wanted to flush the other from the “hide-out” but ended causing the loss of life.

“Her colleagues playfully set the grass on fire and she was unfortunately suffocated to death by the smoke,” he said.

The body has since been taken to the morgue by the police.
