Prepare for new look Kenya 7s, says Treu

Kenya Sevens head coach Paul Treu says fans should expect a more direct approach to the game when the team plays in the Dubai Sevens and Port Elizabeth Sevens in South Africa.

In an exclusive interview with NairobiNews, the former South Africa coach said his game plan would revolve around ball carriers, especially captain Andrew Amonde and Oscar Ouma.

New style

“Rather than spread the ball immediately, we have changed to having the big men carry the ball to suck in defenders, then moving wide to the pacemen such as Collins Injera,” he said.

The team for Dubai 7s will be named in a week’s time, and is likely to have most of the players that lost to Fiji in the Plate final of the Gold Coast Sevens.

“Lavin Asego is unavailable due to work commitments, there will be minimal changes in the starting line up,” Treu added.

The coach has injected defence drills to polish up performance after the opening leg of the IRB World Series.

The team beat USA and Tonga 31-5 and 38-0 before losing 0-31 to New Zealand, and 0-36 to Fiji.

The South African will meet local club officials next week to kick-start the process of scouting for players to join the national team.

“In South Africa we had a full professional side which could plan extra sessions any time. Here, some players have school and work forcing them to compromise on a schedule,” he said.

Treu succeeded Englishman Mike Friday a fortnight ago, following the latter’s resignation after the Sevens World Cup in Moscow in June.

Treu’s second assistant, Felix Ochieng, handled the team prior to his arrival.
