Trio in trouble for stealing laptop at a bar in Kibera

Three men who broke into a bar in Kibera, Nairobi, and stole a laptop worth Sh38,000 are awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to theft charges.

They are Kenneth Okello, Stephen Omondi, and Michael Ochieng.

The trio is accused of stealing the laptop belonging to Lawrence Ochieng in Gatwekera area of Kibera on August 30, 2022, jointly with their accomplice who has not been arrested.

Omondi was to be slapped with an alternative charge of handling stolen property after he was found with the laptop knowing or having reasons to believe it to be stolen but the same was dropped after he admitted theft charges.

The complainant was outside his bar when he saw four men running away from his bar and noticed that one of them was carrying a laptop, and upon checking, he found his laptop missing.

He reported the matter at Kibera police station.

On September 2, Okello was seen at the same bar.

The complainant locked him inside and went to a nearby police post where he reported and two police officers accompanied him to the bar where they arrested Okello.

During interrogation, Okello confessed he had stolen the laptop together with three others.

He led the police to the arrest of Omondi. Omondi was found with the laptop which was recovered and led to the arrest of Ochieng. Their accomplice was not found.

They were escorted to Kibera police station where police recommended theft charges.

The trio admitted the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Philip Mutua.

Mutua remanded them at the Kibera police station until September 8 when they will be sentenced after the laptop is availed to the court as an exhibit.
