Turban-clad girl denied Form One admission
A girl who was to join Form One is pondering her next move after the school she was admitted to declined to do so because she was wearing a turban.
Faith Wanjiru garnered 374 marks out of 500 marks in last year’s KCPE and was admitted to Bunyore Girls School. She claims that upon reporting to the school everything was normal until they went to pick the school uniform.
“I was even given an admission number, but when we went to pick the school uniform I was told I can’t stay in school with the turban,” Wanjiru said.
She says that the school administration stood it’s ground even after her parents explained that it was against their religion for women to remove the turban.
“The teachers told us that my daughter wouldn’t be admitted with a turban, so we parked everything and returned home,” said Wanjiru’s father Mr Peter Irungu, who is a preacher at Universal Gospel Assemblies of God.
The father is now appealing to anyone who can help her daughter find a school where she can study in peace.
