Two plead guilty to stealing magistrate phone, TV set


Two cleaners and a driver of a Judicial Service Commissioner have been charged with stealing a television set and mobile phone of a magistrate from the Milimani Law Courts.

Eric Manyange Ondieki (driver) and the two cleaners Andrew Onsando Orina and David Elikana Nyabuto faced three counts of conspiracy to steal, stealing and handling stolen property.

Orina and Nyabuto pleaded guilty to all the charges but Ondieki denied them.

Orina and Nyabuto, employed by Jepco Cleaners Limited admitted they stole the television set valued at Sh50,000 the property of the Judiciary on January 22,2022.

They also admitted stealing the magistrates mobile phone.

But Ondieki, a driver of the JSC Commissioner who denied all the three counts filed against them by the director of public prosecutions applied to be released on bond saying , “he is the sole bread winner in his family”.

He was freed on a cash bail of Sh50,000.

Chief magistrate Wendy Michemi ordered the two cleaners to be presented before the City Court Chief Magistrate Ms Roselyn Onganyo for facts and sentencing.

Ondieki will also be produced before Ms Onganyo to have his case fixed for hearing.

The three were charged with conspiring to steal the TV set make TLC Model 43P615 black in colour worth Sh50,000 the property of Judiciary.

Orina and Nyabuto admitted stealing the TV set on January 22,2022.

Orina, Nyabuto and Ondieki were found with the TV set at the Moto Moto area of Mukuru kwa Njenga slum on February 3,2022 knowing it had been stolen or illegally obtained.

Ondieki was separately charged with undertaking the removal of the TV set from the Milimani law courts on January 22,2022.

The TV is usually watched by children who are subjects of court proceedings.

Orina and Nyabuto who are employed by Jepco Cleaning Limited were caught on CCTV Camera’s mounted at the expansive court building at the Community Area Nairobi.

The Milimani Court Building which houses the High Court and its various divisions- Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELCR), the Anti-Corruption Court, Commercial Divions, Family Division, Magistrates Courts and Enviroment and Lands Court is fitted with surveillance gadgets which are on 24 hours.

The building which is the former headquarters of the East African Community was acquired by the Government during the regime of retired President Mwai Kibaki.

It was renovated then handed over to the Judiciary.
