Uber joins tuk tuk disruption venture in Mombasa


Uber has introduced a new product, uberPOA in Mombasa which will enable users to hail tuk tuk services on its platform.

General Manager for Uber East Africa Loic Amado said the taxi hailing firm is keen on providing products that fit the needs of riders and drivers across the cities.

“Tuk tuks are a popular choice across Kenya, and we are determined to launch localized products such as uberPOA that resonates with the local citizens.

“When we launched uberX two years ago, we knew that this city would surpass our expectations, we have managed to create hundreds of economic opportunities and we are excited to create even more with the roll-out of uberPOA,” he said.

uberPOA is currently only available within Mombasa Island (town), Nyali, Mkomani, Kongowea, Kisauni, Bamburi.

The uberPOA product will be priced with a base fare of Sh10, Sh15 per kilometer, Sh3 per min and a minimum fare of Sh50.

Riders will be able to travel to popular routes such as Posta to Nyali from Sh170, Posta to Bamburi from Sh280, Likoni ferry to Tudor from Sh270, Kongowela to City Mall from Sh130 and Bamburi to Pirates from Sh50.

uberPOA, which means cool in Swahili, will be running alongside uberX and will follow the same strict safety measures applied to all Uber options.

Dar Es Salaam was the first city in East Africa to receive uberPOa.

There are more than 10,000 tuk tuks registered in Mombasa.

The three-wheeled vehicles are popular in Mombasa as they are cheaper and can easily maneuver around the island

Other tuk tuk hailing services in Mombasa include Dubai-based taxi hailing firm Mondo Ride, Estonia based Taxify and Jingorides taxi app.
