Uganda opposition leaders urge Museveni to dismiss son from army

Opposition leaders in Uganda have asked President Yoweri Museveni to dismiss his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) spokesperson Semujju Nganda made the demand in a public address while discussing the country’s gains and challenges on her 60th birthday.

“Muhoozi should be dismissed from UPDF in disgrace,” he said.

“The whole of last week, the country was discussing Museveni’s family again. His spoilt son, Muhoozi who until last week was commander of the country’s land forces, repeatedly insulted Kenya in several of his tweets.”

Nganda further suggested his political outfit will consider challenging Muhoozi’s promotion in the army in the courts.

“The law is very clear. This is scandalous behaviour. By promoting him, Museveni went against the spirit of the law. This precedent of rewarding misconduct will now be used by others.”

Muhoozi recently threatened to topple President William Ruto’s government in a series of Twitter rants.

He then mocked Kenya’s democratic process and suggested he was annoyed with former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision not to contest for a third term in the August 2022 polls even though the law barred him from doing so.

His tweets led to varied reactions on social media with Kenyans expressing their shock, while senior government officials from Kenya and Uganda engaged in diplomatic talks leading to a public apology by President Yoweri Museveni.

Prior to issuing the apology, Museveni, 78, fired Muhoozi as Chief of Land Forces but promoted him to General, the highest position in the army.
