Ugandan house help from hell given four years in jail

Jolly Tumuhiirwe, the 22 year old house help who was captured on CCTV meting violence against a one-and half-year-old baby in Naalya, Wakiso district, has been sentenced to four years in prison.

She was sentenced by Buganda Road court Chief Magistrate Lillian Bucyana.

On Friday last week, after pleading guilty to the charges of assault whose maximum sentence is five years in jail, Ms Tumuhiirwe  told the court that her bosses, especially the baby’s mother Angella Mbabazi, had on several occasions assaulted her and she therefore transferred the anger to the baby in retaliation.

However, the magistrate noted that Ms Tumuhiirwe’s reasons for assaulting the innocent baby were unjustifiable.

“No amount of mistreatment of an adult to another should justify the kind of brutality exhibited by the convict upon a young, innocent, helpless, defenceless child. It is for this reason that I find the aggravating circumstances much stronger than the mitigating facts. Therefore, the convict is hereby given a four year jail term in Luzira Prison,” said the Chief Magistrate.
