Ugandan midfielder Aucho claims monthly KPL award

Gor Mahia’s midfield anchorman Khalid Aucho on Wednesday bagged the Sportpesa/SJAK Player for the Month of May.

The explosive box-to-box Ugandan midfielder claimed the gong on 17 votes ahead of teammate Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma and Ulinzi Stars’ forward John Mark Makwatta, both of whom got 15 votes. Sony Sugar’s defensive midfielder Frederick ‘Uche’ Onyango was fourth with 13 votes.

Aucho, who was clearly surprised by the feat, dedicated the award to his late brother who was interred in Uganda last week.

“I didn’t expect to get the award. In fact, I thought it would be one of my colleagues here. But I’m happy and I thank God for it. It feels good to be recognized after hard work,” he said shortly after he was presented with the trophy at the team’s training base at Camp Toyoyo.

POTENTIAL MOVE

The Ugandan international, who has so far been linked with a potential move to Scottish Premier League giants, Rangers, also talked about his future.

“It (a move to Rangers) would be good for my career because that’s a different team and league. But at the moment, I’m patient and focusing on duties at Gor Mahia. If it happens, then it’s fine,” he said.

An important cog in coach Jose Marcelo’s game plan, Aucho guided K’Ogalo to four victories in the team’s stormy run in the month of May, scoring a goal and providing three assists.

For his heroics, he took home Sh100, 000, a 43-inch LG television set and a personalised trophy.

Aucho becomes the fourth recipient of the monthly award after Timothy Otieno of Posta Rangers who claimed it in February, Sharif Mohamed (Bandari, March), and Wycliffe Ochomo (Muhoroni Youth, April).
