Ugandans turn on Deputy Mayor Doreen Nyanjura for giving birth
Early morning March 15, 2024, Ms Nyanjura Doreen Omutatina, the Deputy Lord Mayor for Kampala, Uganda, published photos on her social media holding a new born baby girl without exposing the child’s face. Local media reported she had given birth a day earlier and not many knew she had been expecting a baby because her pregnancy was unnoticeable.
“You no longer annoy me, musesa busesa. Have a beautiful day,” said Ms Nyanjura as she posed with the baby.
She received hearty congratulations on birthing a healthy child and advised to enjoy motherhood. But in the same breath, her critics had no words to mince for her allegedly going against the feminism she preaches.
See, Ms Nyanjura, a hardcore feminist, had stated in January 2023 that she would never get married because she does not believe in the ideals of the institution of marriage, but wanted to have a baby as part of her 2023 resolutions.
There had been no known or publicized man in her life, and her decision to make wanting a baby public caused an uproar as a section of Ugandans told her she should have kept that resolution private.
Well, 14 months later, after announcing her intention to have a baby and finally holding on in her arms, her critics returned in full force to accuse her of letting feminists down by having a baby- and essentially, a family.

Nairobi News sampled some of these critics’ reactions as seen below:
“You did feminists bad Doreen. Accept,” said V3n to which Ms Nyanjura responded by saying, “You know nothing about feminism.”
“This is proof to wanabie feminists to not take everything serious on social media . People will mislead us and go to their loving husbands while the rest be like , “I am independent, I need no man!” claimed Eric Santosop.
“I like it when you laugh at us, or maybe you are not laughing at me, but just the feminists who you used to divert ๐๐,” added Nelly.
“Misled people, here now you have a bay,” Paul Conrad accused her.
“People are pointing out your feminist hypocrisy,” added Ned.
At the end of the day, some Ugandans took the leap of faith and defended her decision to have a baby.
“Its the way people think you misled women out there. Doreen how do you navigate this ignorance and stay sane….people think feminists don’t get married or have kids? Hahah they here feeling like they roasting you….hahaha blatant ignorance ๐,” defended Abigail Malotana.
