Uhuru orders CS Keter to lower electricity cost by next month
President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed Energy Secretary Charles Keter to undertake a downward review of the cost of electricity in order to lower the cost of doing business in the country.
Speaking at Strathmore Business School on Tuesday, during the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) presidential round table, the President told Mr Keter to review the electricity tariff by next month.
“Lazima tu-deal na mambo ya stima, bei ya stima kwa ukweli kwa wenzetu wengi imepanda. Na leo hii mimi naamrisha waziri within one month u-review mambo ya bei ya stima haswa kwa hawa wananchi with a view ya kupunguza bei ya stima ndio waeze kufanya biashara,” the President said.
IMPROVE SUPPORT
The President admitted that the national government and county governments need to improve on their level of support to SMEs.
“This is a conversation that has just began, not ended and we want to see in reality the actions to the issues raised by these people. Na kila mtu atoe suti. Nikiuliza hapa nani amewahi kuenda Gikomba utapata hakuna mmoja. Na sisi wanasiasa tunaenda huko wakati wa kutafuta kura na tukipata tunahama, yangu ni kuwaahidi you will see actions,” he said.
President Kenyatta proposed that a similar forum be held in a month’s time to review if the promises made to the SMEs will have been fulfilled.
He listed some of the challenges raised by SMEs at the forum including sanitation, lack of financing, infractural challenges.
‘AIBU GANI HIO?’
“Naambia waziri Macharia hapa, aibu jameni, watu ambao walikuwa tayari kujijengea Gikomba tukawaambia tutawajengea, one year later hakuna kitu, aibu gani hio?” he said.
The President said he is not ready to read any more speeches of unfulfilled promises and stated that the SMEs will see changes done by both the national and county governments.
“Gikomba jameni, Sonko ukitoa watu wako hapa wafunge hio sewage iflow vizuri, shida iko wapi?” he questioned.
The SMEs in attendance cheered on as the President said that heads will roll and there shall be action taken within a month.
