Uhuru security: Orengo schools Ruto on vengeance with apt Bible verse

By Winnie Mabel February 3rd, 2023 2 min read

Siaya Governor James Orengo subtly thrown shade at Kenya Kwanza government with an apt Bible over its ‘mistreatment’ of retired president Uhuru Kenyatta following the scaling down of his security detail.

Citing a verse in the Bible Governor Orengo appeared to warn President William Ruto against being vengeful.

“Scriptures are amazing. I read somewhere… Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord. On the contrary: If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good,” Orengo tweeted.

The verse comes from the book of Romans 12:19.

It should be noted that the Kenya Kwanza’s top leadership, President Ruto included, is well-known for citing Bible scripture in their political engagements, identifying themselves as Christians as opposed to their opponents.

Orengo’s sentiments come amid the ongoing conversation over the state benefits accorded to the retired head of state, legally sanctioned tax waivers amounting to hundreds of millions of shillings and the Kenyatta family businesses allegedly benefiting from government decisions over their competitors.

In recent days, there have been renewed hostilities between President Kenyatta and his then estranged deputy that preceded last year’s elections. This has been occasioned by continued calls to have the Kenyatta family tax audited and for the amendment of laws prescribing the benefits that former presidents receive for life upon exit from office.

In the last onslaught on the Kenyatta family the government scaled down Mr Kenyatta’s security detail from 96 to 25 elite police officers with senior security personnel attached to the retired president replaced with officers of lower ranks.

Former  Interior minister Fred Matiang’i and his Interior principal secretary Karanja Kibicho have also had their security detail scaled down from from 18 to two officers each.

Having started off with their famous bromance in their first term of office, Mr Kenyatta and President Ruto eventually fell out bitterly with the former overlooking his deputy and throwing his weight behind Raila Odinga’s presidential candidacy in last year’s presidential election.
