Uhuru welcomes naming of roads after him and DP
President Uhuru Kenyatta has welcomed a move by an MP to name two roads after him and his deputy William Ruto.
The president welcomed the name of two roads in Chuka Town in Tharaka Nithi through his spokesman Manoah Esipisu.
“Leaders have the democratic right to honour any leader in the country for services to the nation; and those so honoured can both be proud and humbled by this,” said Mr Esipisu.
The two roads were named after the two leaders at the behest of Chuka/Igamba Ng’ombe MP Muthoni Njuki who also got his name on a road.
Area Senator Kithure Kindiki also got decorated.
However, there were murmurs following reports that locals were not involved, with majority feeling that there were more deserving individuals than the four.
Tharaka-Nithi County communication boss Douglas Kaunda also said the county government did not participate nor was it consulted in the naming.
“We were surprised to see signposts in town bearing some names,” said Mr Kaunda.
Town administrator Boniface Murithi said the county has written to Kenya Urban Roads Authority demanding to know why the streets were named without involving the town administration.
“We have written a letter to KURA seeking explanation,” said Mr Murithi.
On his official Facebook account, Prof Kindiki denied being consulted before his name could be used and declined the honour.
“I do not believe a public facility should be named after me, not now, not in the future, because I have not yet made enough sacrifices to our community’s development to warrant a road being named in my honour,” said the senator.
We could not reach Mr Ruto for a comment.
