Uhuru’s new BFF Akon to perform on Jamhuri day…..for free

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s new BFF and American RnB star Akon will perform free of charge in Kenya during next month’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Two weeks ago, during a live interview on Google hangout organised by NTV, Akon fell short of confirming the performance, saying talks were underway.

A source close to President Kenyatta and the celebrations’ organising committee, confirmed that Akon had offered to perform for free.

Asked to confirm whether President Kenyatta was bringing the Lonely hit maker to the country, State House said he (Akon) was coming on his own.

Although the source did not confirm the venue and the programme of the event, it is being said that he will perform on December 12 at an after party to be held at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani.

DISQUIET

Rumour that the RnB star was set to headline the Jamhuri Day celebrations has caused disquiet among some Kenyan artistes, who have accused the organisers of favouring international artistes while ignoring local ones.

By agreeing to perform in Kenya pro bono, Akon seems to be keen on consolidating the cordial relationship he has formed with President Kenyatta, whom he has met at least twice this year.

The two first met in the US earlier this year and the musician flew to Kenya in September in a low-key trip where he was hosted at State House by President Kenyatta.

He pledged to take his project of lighting Africa to Kibera slums.
