Uhuru’s night out on the streets of Mombasa

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday evening surprised Mombasa residents when he took to the streets and beaches by night.

While on a tour to inspect a street lighting project within Mombasa city, the President stopped to great commuters in matatus.

A commuter who was in a matatu even gave the President a young boy to hold.

President Kenyatta later visited public beaches and greeted the locals and revelers on the sandy beaches.

The President was accompanied by Kenya Power managing director Dr Ben Chumo.

The Sh1.2 billion street lighting Mwangaza Mtaani project, which was launched in September 2015, aims at wooing investors and revitalizing the tourism industry at the coast.

During the just concluded festive season, visitors to the town were allowed to stay on at Jomo Kenyatta public beach after dusk and in the process extending business hours.

Previously, the county only allowed people at its beaches up to 6pm due to safety and security concerns.
