Unep employee seeks out-of-court deal after battering ex-lover

A Nairobi-based employee of the United Nations Environmental Program (Unep) has told a court that he is pursuing an out-of-court settlement with his former lover over assault charges.

Alphonse Kambu, a Papua New Guinea citizen, was arraigned in court on Thursday morning to take a plea to charges of assaulting Ruth Gakii.

His lawyer however asked the court to defer the plea because his client is pursuing a resultion of of court.

Mr Kambu is accused of assaulting Ms Gakii at her house along Kamiti Road on October 18.

He reportedly assaulted Ms Gakii after dropping their son home while intoxicated and demanded for food.

The two had separated in 2012 after the birth of their son and an earlier court ruling had awarded the mother of the child custody.

Mr Kambu was arrested by detectives on Wednesday morning while driving within Garden Estate.
