University of Nairobi students suspended over unrest
The University of Nairobi has suspended 62 students among them the incumbent chairman’s main opponent Mike Jacobs.
A statement the University’s Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi said that disciplinary process on the students who participated in recent unrest, which led to the institution’s indefinite closure last week, had started.
“The University of Nairobi has initiated disciplinary process against the following students for participating in student unrest and destruction of public property,” read the statement in part.
The university went on to state that the students should collect their suspension letters this week adding that more details had been sent to the individual mails.
SUSPENSION LETTERS
“They are therefore required to collect their suspension letters from the Registrar, Students’ Affairs, latest by Friday, April 15, 2016,” read the statement.
The unrest followed the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu) elections that were held on April 02, 2016.
Paul Ongili, better known as Babu Owino, was elected Chairman, but supporters of his rivals disputed the outcome and staged a four-day protest that forced the university’s closure last week.
