University staff announce strike to push for better pay – VIDEO

University lecturers and non-teaching staff have announced the commencement of a strike to push for improved remuneration.

This is despite the strike being outlawed by an order from the Employment and Labour Relations Court.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Chairman Muga K’olale said that there will be no teaching or work going on beginning on Wednesday January 18, 2016 until their demands are met.

According to the unions, they presented a CBA proposal to the Inter-Public Universities Consultative Council Forum on March 3 last year which the latter has yet to respond to with a counter-proposal.

Among their demands is to have the least paid lecturer earning Sh350,000 with a full professor taking home Sh1.9 million per month. The lecturers are also demanding for a new grading structure and salary harmonisation.

The unions are seeking a counter offer based on their last proposal.
