Unskilled teachers in many city schools

A third of public primary school mathematics teachers in Nairobi lack the required competence to tackle the subject effectively.

This is according to a survey conducted by the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) in Korogocho and Viwandani.

According to the report, the teachers scored less than 40 per cent in a teacher-maths test conducted as part of the study, a mark that disqualifies them from handling the subject.

“No teacher should be allowed to handle a subject he or she scored less than C+ at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination,” said Dr Moses Ngware, Head of the Education Research Programme at APHRC.

Dr Ngware said such incompetence could be the reason why children in public schools continue to perform poorly.

“It is important to provide classroom-based support to improve a teacher’s services and enable pupils record outstanding results,” he added.

Dr Ngware asked the government to streamline quality and availability of early childhood development centres and shorten the distance to government schools.
