USIU searching for a new vice chancellor, any suggestions?
The tenure of Prof Freida Brown as the vice-chancellor of United States International University-Africa (USIU) is set to come to an end this year.
The university’s Board of Trustees chaired by Dr Manu Chandaria has since embarked on the search for a new vice-chancellor.
On Saturday, during the institution’s 37th graduation ceremony, Prof Brown who has been at the helm of the institution since 1994 bid farewell to the students and their parents.
“This graduation is momentous for me as it is my last as vice-chancellor of USIU-Africa,” Prof Brown told the gathering.
Cord leader Raila Odinga, who was the chief guest at the event, praised Prof Brown for guiding the university and for ensuring that there was planned growth, solid infrastructure, flexible fee payment plan and world-class degree programmes.
“Prof Brown has made a tremendous contribution to our nation. I wish you success in your next undertakings. I am proud of you,” said Mr Odinga.
University Chancellor Manu Chandaria said the student’s centre which is under construction at the university will be named after Prof Brown, in recognition of her immense contribution to the institution’s growth.
“The Board of Trustees met and agreed to name the centre after Prof Freida Brown due to her distinguished contribution to this university,” said Mr Chandaria.
In her speech, Prof Brown took time to reflect on her long journey at USIU which started on August 24, 1994 when she arrived to head the institution.
“Today, I leave behind a billion shilling endowment,” she said to cheers from the crowd.
She said the institution went from being a campus in a multi-campus system to being totally independent with dual accreditation.
The undergraduate student population has grown from 800 in 1994 to 6,027 representing 69 nations.
