Varsity postpones exams in Kikuyu campus to allow recovery
Administrators at University of Nairobi have postponed scheduled examinations at the Kikuyu Campus where one student died and 167 others were injured on Sunday in a stampede.
The end of semester exams, which were scheduled to start this Monday, will now commence next week Monday.
The university’s administration confirmed that only the Kikuyu Campus students will be affected by the postponement.
Exams in other campuses will proceed as scheduled.
The decision to postpone the exams at Kikuyu campus was to recover from Sunday’s incident that was caused by an electricity fault at the hostel’s main supply station.
RECOVER FROM AFTERMATH
“The decision was taken to allow students to come to terms with the aftermath of the incident and prepare adequately for the examinations,” a statement from Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi said.
Prayers for the dead student and his colleagues who were injured will be held at the institution on Monday at 2pm.
A notice posted on the university’s website read: “This is to inform you that there will be a prayer meeting for staff and students today 13th April, 2015 at 2.00 p.m. in the School of Education LTB 1 Hall.
“The prayers are for the College and the University especially in light of the events of Sunday 12th April, 2015 at Kimberly Hostels.”
The electricity fault caused ‘gunshot like’ explosion that caused panic among students who feared it could be a replica of the terror attack at Garissa University College.
The injured were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (113) and Kikuyu Mission Hospital (54) where 24 are still receiving treatment in both hospitals.
Kikuyu Campus hosts the College of Education and External Studies.
