Varsity staff boycott classes in day two of strike

Lecturers stayed out of classes on Thursday for the second day of their strike, leaving students to study on their own in hostels and under trees.

Offices at the University of Nairobi remained closed with student leaders threatening to join their lecturers in the strike.

“We need services at the universities and so the government ought to engage the workers and if the situation calls for it we will join them and demand for services,” said Nairobi student leader Duboris Maina.

The university’s workers insisted they will only call off the strike if they are paid.

“We are not calling off the strike until the Vice Chancellors agree to pay us the entire 3.9 billion,” said George Kariuki, KUSU Official University of Nairobi.

At Kenyatta University, some lecturers ignored the strike and taught students in the morning.

Some offices in the administration block were also opened.
